Helpful with some things, detrimental in others
I liked a good portion of the book, but I don’t believe this should be treated as a class or definite “how-to”. I had an issue with how the author represented and recommended representing male and female bodies. The bodies weren’t realistic (and I don’t fault him for that- this is manga we’re talking about), but if I’m not mistaken every ‘female’ pose was provocative and every female character had the same build and same revealing clothing and same done-up face. There were also double standards, like how he states (I’m paraphrasing) “clothing should hang correctly” despite showing drawings of female characters whose clothing purposely doesn’t hang correctly in order to shout “here are breasts and here are butts” (clothing doesnt cling to the body like that unless it’s extremely tight-fitting and limits movement tremendously). If this wasn’t intentional, then a little warning saying “I’m showcasing how manga is drawn sometimes. I don’t approve of this way of drawing” would’ve been nice. I really don’t want to sound mean, as I’m an artist myself, but I find that these types of things can do much more harm than good.
