Great intro to the language
This book has been a great jumping off point for learning Dutch. I took about two chapters a week (had a trip deadline) and am excited that I can now have basic reading comprehension and writing skills. I created flash cards from the vocabulary words and phrases and I plan to go back through and re-do the exercises to solidify the concepts until they become more like drills. The app was a really great companion, but I don’t imagine I’d have listening comprehension to keep up with a native speaker, even if they spoke slowly. I’m definitely better at reading Dutch than translating my thoughts into Dutch, but I have tried a few free-writes. This books is just a starting point.Some of the conversation examples in later chapters were confusing because the two characters were not actually listening and responding to each other, but rather having two separate conversations. E.g., going to a butcher and ordering meat while simultaneously asking how a vacation to Spain went. While conversations in real life can have multiple threads, a beginner book should have single-thread conversations.Despite it’s faults, I’d still recommend this as a good starting point for anyone interested in the language.

Get the updated version w/ audio app
I’ve been learning Dutch on my own for three years, primarily using a popular “free” language learning site. I’m 68, so my language window closed a long, long time ago. And I do struggle with grammar. If this book was my first exposure to the language, I think I’d be fairly overwhelmed. For me, the information provided is very clear but very dense.There is a good variety of exercises that do get to the heart of each particular lesson, as well as a vocabulary list, and a relevant conversation. There is an English-Dutch dictionary and a short list of verb conjugations at the back of the book.The authors do recommend spending 8 hours a week learning, but I’m not sure that there is 8 hours of work included per week. My assessment is that this book is a great supplement; in my experience, having as many different approaches to learning as possible is ideal. There is an updated version with an audio app, which would be far more useful.

Okay, but spend a little extra and get the companion dvd,
It’s okay, but I should of bought the package with the dvd, without hearing the words being spoken it’s hard to pick up, because of all the grammar rules.
