More than thirty years ago, Richard Bandler set out to discover how some therapists managed to effect startling change with their clients, while others were arguing about theories as their face patients waited in vain for help. Now widely regarded as the world’s greatest hypnotist, Richard Bandler observed and developed patterns which became the foundation of neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), arguably one of the most profoundly effective approaches for self-development and change. Since coauthoring the internationally influential books, The Structure of Magic Volume 1, and Patterns of the Hypnotic Techniques of Milton Erickson, M.D. Volume 1, Bandler has traveled the world, honing his skills and helping people solve problems and achieve goals when other “experts” have been unable to help. Richard Bandler’s Guide to TRANCE-formation, he returns to his roots: hypnotic phenomena, trancework, and altered states to provide a highly compelling prescription for personal change. According to Bandler, “trance” is at the very foundation of human experience. People are not simply in or out of trance, but are moving from one trance to another. They have their work trances, their relationship trances, their driving trances, and their parenting trances. Some of these states are useful and appropriate; others are not. With his signature wit and contrarian approach to therapy, Bandler shows how anyone can reset or reprogram problem behaviors to desired alternatives, with lasting and life-altering results. Peppered with case studies and more than thirty exercises, Richard Bandler’s Guide to TRANCE-formation, is an intriguing, engaging, and often amusing, read for anyone, whether they are new to NLP, want to further their NLP training, or simply want to make a positive difference in their own lives.

Patterns, Learning and Change – How to Take Charge of Your Brain
Human beings learn automatically. We learn a language effortlessly because we’re born with the wiring already in place for us to accumulate the means of communicating with other people of our kind. We are powerful language-learning machines, but we are also behavior-learning machines.
Some of the behaviors we learn turn into bad habits, and some turn into profoundly good habits. But the fact that we learn anything at all means we can learn something else—something more useful, quicker, and better. We know now that it doesn’t have to take time and hard work. In fact, human beings learn best when they learn fast, and when they learn to make things unconscious so that the behavior can run automatically.
If you have fears, it’s not that heights or spiders or meeting new people, for example, scare you; it’s that you learned how to be afraid of heights, spiders, and new people. Babies are born with only two fears: the fear of falling and the fear of loud noises. All other human fears are learned. Therefore, if you learned to be afraid, you can learn to be unafraid. If you learned to do something one way, you can learn how to do it totally differently and better. Learning is the way to personal freedom. Hypnosis and NLP are tools to make this easy and fun.

Great NLP/Hypnosis book
This review is based on the book, and I believe you will find it quite helpful. I ordered it the day it came out, using my Amazon prime membership and had it overnighted. It kept me up all night. First I will cover the positive elements of this book: For those who are experienced at NLP or hypnosis, you will find it a refreshing and comprehensive review, with a few updates on processes and approaches from Bandler. For example he describes how he uses the meta-model now in an opposite manor to what he wrote in “The Structure of Magic I”. For those who are teachers you will find the self-help exercises given at the end of each chapter familiar from your own NLP training, and useful new light is shed on them, with a few new ideas. The scripts, back matter, glossary and other resource files in the back make this an essential book for quick reference and study. For those who are new to hypnosis or NLP, you will find the examples concrete, clear and well written. This is a comprehensive book covering many complex ideas, but with a highlighter and a pen you will be able to learn skills and begin applying them immediately. The lessons are categorized well, and to me it seems like an excellent introductory text, and I will begin recommending it to all my students at an introductory or intermediate level. You will understand hypnosis and NLP if you really take the time to study this book.I also think that for those considering this book as a “self-help” book, you will find it helpful. All of the material can easily be internalized and practiced as self-transformation and help you to do what the subtitle actually promises. Now the downside (although there really aren’t too many). First, the book is a basic NLP book and those who have a lot of experience and don’t enjoy the review and reframes of prior knowledge may find it less than challenging, or covers a lot of material that has already been covered. For me though, I enjoyed the review, update and exercises as suggested after 35 years of Bandlers teaching experience has helped these to evolve. Second, Bandler makes more than a few statements that cause me to ask, “Where is the footnote?” And third, the irreverent style of Bandler can be a distraction at times, with a lot of hyperbole and opinion. However, I actually enjoyed this, even when I disagreed. An example of this was his attempt to reframe NLP by stating the following: “NLP may be thought of as the underlying structure of hypnosis”.I wish I could give it four and a half stars, but I can’t so I will go ahead and give it five stars, and am glad I bought the book.

Excellent and useful book
It goes over many useful techniques from a master of the craft who clearly understands the nature of suggestion and the science behind it.

Easy Life-changing Tools!!
This book is amazing. Changed every aspect of life! From the gym to making music to everyday communication with others! I highly recommend this book; but keep a dictionary around due to the vocabulary of Mr. Bandler. He’s has extensive mouth! lol but over all, very well written. I could go on but I don’t wanted to flood you with my experiences. Experience for yourself!! Good Luck!Much Luv & Peace!!

Finally, a good NLP book straight from the horse himself
This is a very good Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) book by Bandler himself. It summarizes a lot about NLP in a way that is clear and easy to understand.I especially like that Bandler shuns the psychmumo “why” and goes for the “how”. I think that he is spot on.There is a decent appendix that is worth reading.I highly recommend this book if you are interested in any kind of change in yourself. Forget about buying a shrink a new house as you spend years trying to understand why you do something, only to discover that it makes no difference.Instead, discover how your fears and phobias work in you mind. Are they pictures? Are they fuzzy, vivid, up close, from a distance, color or black and white? Learn to store memories the way the mind does to make them more potent or less potent.

Good, with a lot of filler
Bandler spends a lot of time in this book repeating “they were wrong, I was right.” We get it. How many more times do I have to read how he proved someone wrong using NLP?

The sun on the cover is DEFINITELY rising!!
I remember hearing the story of our forefathers writing the United States Constitution. And in the room where they focused their energies on creating one marvelous piece of democracy… there was a painting on the wall of a sun.For so long, this painting was taken to be a SETTING sun. However, at the end of the creative process, when the Constitution was finally drafted… one member of Congress stood up and said that the sun was indeed RISING.And this book is a SHINING example of the genius of Richard Bandler.Just the WRITING is top-notch and VERY fluid to read. And that’s not saying anything about the techniques and revelations you will find when you read this book.To me, this is probably my all time favorite book by Richard Bandler. He answers SO MANY unchallenged beliefs about hypnosis and what is possible, that I’ve read it 3 or 4 times already, just to soak it up.I especially like how easy he makes using hypnosis…and chaining states…and nesting loops…and altering belief systems.Plus the Meta-model and Milton model appendices are PURE GOLD. I’ve referred to them MANY times while doing covert hypnosis on my friends and family (a skill I didn’t really harness until AFTER I read this book). One thing is certain… the sun on Bandler’s book cover is definitely RISING.If you are looking for a VERY fresh, applicable, and entertaining understanding of hypnosis, you will find it here.Thank you Richard. I hope you read this. […] Thx!

I actually really enjoyed this one. It’s straightforward & easy to understand, and is a lovely introduction to NLP or a good add on for learning more. This was the best NLP book I’ve come across so far
Ashish Grewal –
Something totally top level. Only read when you are at a level. The level is not for schoolers, if you are in final year or graduated. Not because of the qualifications but the maturity of you understanding.

I used this book after going to a little seminar on hynpotherapy. I actually only did most of the exercises for about 5 minutes at a time, yet the changes I’ve seen in my relationship, with my inner peace, and with my contentment living in a foreign country are spectacular. I recommend this book to anyone motivated to live a better version of their life.
