It started off innocuously. I was sitting at my desk, typing away at a report for work while my cat curled up in my lap and purred contentedly. As the minutes ticked by, I noticed a strange sensation coming over me. It felt like I couldn’t get enough air, like the walls were closing in around me and crushing me from all sides. Soon my heart was racing faster than ever before, sweat beading on my forehead as an overwhelming feeling of dread started to take hold of me. I tried to tell myself that everything was fine, nothing bad was actually happening, but the more I tried to ignore it, the worse it seemed to get until I eventually found myself unable to move or think straight. All my energy had suddenly dried up, and I felt like I’d been thrown into a dark abyss with no escape. That’s when I knew—I was having a panic attack.
