The way of Peace
An excerpt from His Holiness The Dalai Lama
If I were to develop feelings of vindictiveness, anger, or hatred towards the Chinese, who would be the loser? I would, because I’d lose my own peace of mind, my sleep, & my appetite. My bitterness would not effect the Chinese in the least. If I became extremely upset, that would also prevent me from making those around me happy.
Anyone is free to differ with me on this, but I try to stay joyful. If we want to work effectively for freedom & justice, it’s better to do so without anger or deviousness. If we feel calm, and act with a sincere motivation, we can accomplish many things in the 30 – 50 active years or our life. And if some positive results have already been seen from this approach, I think I can say that it’s in part because of my commitment to a pacifist cause, a commitment motivated by a genuine belief in the brotherhood of mankind.
Love and Compassion
We are not a very large nation or powerful nation, but our way of life, our culture, and our spiritual tradition have helped us follow the way of peace even at times of tremendous difficulty and hardship, and have given us courage in our wish to develop love and compassion.
Make Kindness, compassion and wisdom a daily activity
My religion is kindness
Every action that is conscious, and that aims at bringing about a result, arises from a motivation. My religion is very simple: my key motivation is love. My religion is kindness.
Our mundane concerns
Like and dislike, gain and loss, praise and blame, fame and disgrace: these are the eight mundane concerns which condition our existence.
The questions we should ask ourselves
‘Who am I?’, ‘What is the nature of my mind?’, ‘What advantage is there in cultivating kind thoughts?’, “What can we gain from harmful thoughts?”. Never stop asking yourself these questions. Reflecting on these points will show you just how much a spoilsport your mind is, and how necessary it is to tame it.
The Buddhist teaching
Usually, when I describe the essence of Buddhism I say that at best we should try to help others, and if we cannot help them at least we should do them no harm. This teaching grows from the soil of love and compassion.
