Authorities in our business will tell in no uncertain terms that Lorem Ipsum is that huge, huge no no to forswear forever. Not so fast, I'd say, there are some redeeming factors in favor of greeking text, as its use is merely the symptom of a worse problem to take into consideration.

Product care

Anyway, you still use Lorem Ipsum and rightly so, as it will always have a place in the web workers toolbox, as things happen, not always the way you like it, not always in the preferred order.

The 5th edition (published 2013) of the 16-inch diameter plastic Guide to the Stars chart is an instrument to help you identify the constellations. You simply dial-in your observing time and date to find the set of constellations visible in your sky (this is accomplished by turning the clear top piece). Although this chart is designed for beginners, seasoned amateur astronomers will find it useful, too.

This chart can be used anywhere in the world between latitudes 30 and 60 degrees North, which includes the US and Canada, England, Europe, Northern China and Japan.

The 16-inch diameter is large and easy to read, ideal for families, teachers and seniors! The 5th edition has been improved by indicating more binocular objects and providing more pertinent information on the back, all without increasing clutter or decreasing the text size.

The front chart indicates 70 Constellations, the Names of 55 Stars, the Milky Way Band, the Ecliptic (which is the path of the Sun, Moon and Planets), 54 favorite Double Stars, the Summer Triangle, Winter/Summer Tours and 56 Galaxies, Star Clusters and Nebulae that can be observed with binoculars or a small telescope. Additionally, favorite star patterns are noted, like the Great Square of Pegasus, the Circlet of Pisces, the Northern Cross of Cygnus and others.

On the back side, there are useful tables and other astronomical information, including: Mythology, Yearly Meteor Showers, Moon map, Phases of the Moon, Facts about the Planets, A Short history of Astronomy, the 10 Brightest Stars, Information about the Binocular & Telescope Objects (those on the chart), Why Stars Twinkle, additional instructions for using the chart and more.

PLANET NOTE. Most star charts, like this one, do not indicate, on the chart, the position of the Planets or Moon because these objects move through the constellations of the zodiac, along a path in the sky called the Ecliptic (indicated on the chart). Website support is provided to help identify the planets that are visible in the sky.

This chart is also available in a smaller 11-inch diameter (ISBN 1928771-033). And, there is a low-cost kid’s version printed in color on sturdy card-like paper (ISBN 1928771-22X), as well as the Equatorial Guide to the Stars for use in and around the equator (ISBN 1928771-777). Finally, there is the Celestial Atlas Menor, 128 pages chock-full of star charts and tables (ISBN 978-1928771883).

Product great – Amazon Annoyed me
Who puts a piece of tape on the clear part of this product, so when you pull it off, it leaves the tape resedue there to get dirty? Amazon, that’s who. The guide itself physically dirty as if it was in the floor. That’s annoying.Fortunately, aside from some dirt, it’s in good shape. It’s a bit of an adjustment to get used to it. I live in a relatively dark area, but one that has a lot of trees. This is a great tool even to help figure out in a partially blocked sky. I bought it to help me find things with my telescope and binoculars for sky viewing, and I suggest it for anyone. I’m just not sure you should buy it from Amazon as I did unless having it be in need of some windex doesn’t annoy you as much as it does me.UPDATE (9/22/12): I have used this now for a few nights, and am finally getting the hang of it. It took a while to line up the stars with what I was seeing, and Google Sky Maps(GSM) was a big help to confirm what was what. I use this to star hop with my 120mm refractor and my 9×63 binoculars. Once I finally got myself aligned, it became easy to find things like Andromeda. Using this guide, it is MUCH easier to find things in the sky. I does take a while, but it is totally worth the investment. To me, I think it’s a good companion to GSM, because GSM can help you put the names to what you are seeing. Once I got confident in what I was seeing, then I used the guide more than GSM. GSM is still fantastic to help you find planets. I was able to find Uranus last night as well, but couldn’t find Andromeda Galaxy all that well until I figured this guide out. Now, with the guide, it’s easy. It really just takes time to orient to the sky as the map shows it. I am new to astronomy; I’ve had the scope for 6 months, and the binoculars for a few years.

    Better Than Expected
It is a very handy star chart, and it’s good all year. Also, the astronomy information on the reverse side is an added bonus. Personally, I like the large size because it makes it easier to read and creates the space for all of the bonus info.

    Pleasant surprise.
I am a planetarium / astronomy educator. When this came, I was pleasantly surprised. Much nicer than I expected. And BIG. So you are not squinting to see it. Total diameter is 16”. Match date ring with time of night ring and you have a “window” of the sky that time and date. Should serve for most latitudes in the US. Portable and easy to use when out with the telescope, binoculars or just star gazing. And a fair price to boot!

Map is Big, easier to read. For Northern Hemisphere. Know your Latitude before you order!!
We had stargazing maps when my son was in school but I can no longer find so I ordered this with The Night Sky map. Size is good if your eyes are as bad as mine. You must know your latitude, read below. The downside for some people will be – 16.25 inches in diameter map, meaning careful it does not get bent. Will need a special place to store where it will not get damaged. I could get creative and find a way to hang by running thick string through the center. Another downside – wish the backside had same plastic laminate as on front, to protect from dirt and moisture. Don’t lay it down on lawn or anything moist. Map is a thick cardstock (cardboard).Does not dial like The Night Sky map in pic but that is not a problem, the laminate cover moves over the map. The font on map is bold making it easier for me to read.Guide to the Stars map is good for latitude 30° to 60° northern Hemisphere (north of equator). I googled my City’s latitude to make sure it would work. The backside supplies info on your first nights out; Telescope & Binocular Object Notes; Tickle of Mythology; The Moon; Meteor Showers dates; The Planets; Celestial Tidbits. Note: The planets are not charted because they move through the constellations but it does have the ecliptic path of Sun Moon & Planets on the map. I have a Night Sky app on my phone and helps me Identify the planets. Chart Notes provide Constellation names in uppercase with names of stars in italics, and identifies Clusters, Nebulas, Galaxies, Globular Clusters, and Planetary Nebulas.Ordered Guide to the Stars map, The Night Sky map, and a Red LED flashlight – arrived in one box. Guide to the Stars was curved to make it fit and arrived undamaged. Later ordered Eyeskey waterproof compass.Enjoy your voyage to the stars and beyond…

Still useful in this computerised age
Is there a place for a plastic star chart in these days of phone and tablet apps? I think so. While Stellarium is free, and has a lot more stars and objects, this device requires no power, it’s waterproof, and it has a huge display- if that’s the right word. It’s great for planning an evening of viewing, and for finding objects in the sky once you’re outside. It’s also a great teaching aid for learning the night sky.

    Great reference guide
I’m a new star gazer and this is a helpful tool. I would recommend this for any newbie!

The best Guide to the stars there…
You know, I have Telescopius, Skye Eye Pro and other apps, but Guide to the stars allows you use of your cell phone and still have an accurate guide to the night skies by month, day and time. The directions are easy to understand and will allow you to learn the night sky. I personally recommend having a knowledgeable fried who speed the process along. It is quite large though, some might say a bit unwieldy, but a great tool nonetheless for the beginner, or even a bit more advanced, astronomy buff. Highly recommend this product.

I bought this Star Finder for my grandchildren, so I wanted something that would not fall apart easily. I was very pleased to discover that both of the moveable parts are made of plastic, so if they are caught in the rain with it, it won’t disintegrate. It was bought for Christmas, so they haven’t tried it out yet, but from what I can tell, the operating instructions are both easily understood and found on the front. I like the white background for the star chart. The back of it has a lot of interesting tidbits of stellar data. I will buy this again.

This was my fault for not reading description fully, thought I was getting the 16″ version used.Had I known this I would not have purchased it.Note: when using the other purchase options, do not assume the the the other options are for the exact same item!
